๐Ÿ’ก What makes an idea TEDx worthy?

TEDx organizers donโ€™t want to hear your same old schtick! They are looking for something that:

  • feels radically new

  • offers fresh solutions to enduring problems

  • challenges assumptions

  • showcases groundbreaking work

  • redefines the human experience

๐Ÿคผ How competitive is it to be selected for a TEDx talk?

Speaking at a TEDx event is a bucket list item for many people so most events get hundreds of applications each year. Organizers also curate their lineup from their own research so applicants sometimes only make up 2-3 spots per event.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ How long does it take to get a TEDx talk?

Give yourself 2 years. You are unlikely to get your first, second or even 5th event you apply to. Persistence pays off - keep applying and keep refining your idea. Often an event wonโ€™t have room the first year but they will keep you on deck for next year.

๐Ÿ‘“ What are TEDx organizers looking for in an application?

Organizers want to hear something new! They are also looking for variety. Remember a TEDx event is curated for a live audience- they want fresh ideas that are relevant to the people in the room. Having a connection to the city hosting the event is a big advantage.

๐Ÿ–‹๏ธ Do I need a finished talk before applying to TEDx?

No. You do not need a fully formed talk before you apply, you DO need a unique idea that you can articulate clearly and concisely in the application process. Remember, to get accepted to a TEDx event you need a stand out application- the talk will come later.

โฑ๏ธ How long does it take to prepare a TEDx talk?

Most TEDx events will give you 3-6 months to prepare your talk. Your talk will need to be note perfect, with props and slides at least a week before the event. The longer you have to prep the better your talk will be.

๐Ÿš• Can I apply to more than one TEDx event at a time?

Yes. If you get accepted to an event, you will need to disclose if you are already booked to speak at another TEDx.

๐ŸŽค Do I need previous speaking experience to give a TEDx talk?

No. Organizers are looking for great ideas over polished speakers. You can always get coaching once youโ€™re accepted. Many events will even provide their own in-house coaching. (I can help with that!)

๐Ÿ’ฒ Do TEDx speakers get paid?

TEDx speakers do not get paid. Some events will be able to subsidize your transport and hotel if you are travelling a long way.
