Why do you want to do a TEDx?
Why do you want to do a TEDx?
Wanting to stand on that stage, and share your big idea is really compelling. It’s also really brave.
There’s a reason it’s been on your bucket list for years- there’s a certain amount of prestige that comes from that stage, and the challenge is part of the appeal. (It’s like a running a marathon, you want to have done it- not necessarily start training right now!)
There’s the understanding that standing on that red dot will be an incredible rush, there’s the knowledge that your idea is actually really powerful, but there’s also the little glint of potential- what if it blows up and it gets millions of views? What then?
But whilst the potential is huge - and exciting- there’s a ton of more down to earth reasons why standing on that stage is a great next step for you (and your business)
Here’s a not exhaustive list of the reasons it’s worthwhile:
1) Credibility - There’s something about those little red letters that bring authority to your voice. When people see you’re a TEDx speaker they know you have something worth saying, and a voice worth listening to. ‘TEDx Speaker’ sits in your bio and does a huge amount of heavy lifting.
2) Visibility - TED/x videos were watched over a billion times last year. That’s billion with a b. The potential audience for your talk is enormous and the platform is global. If you want your message to spread beyond your regular audience, there are few better ways.
3) Building your speaking career - Doing a TEDx talk will not pay you. But it’s a wonderful advert to organizers who DO pay their speakers, that you’re worth paying. If you want to make speaking a part of your business, then having a TEDx talk under your belt is an amazing jump start.
4) Developing your speaking material - A TEDx talk is 10 minutes. It’s an amuse bouche- that little tasty treat a chef brings you on a spoon that is exploding with flavor and leaves the audience wanting more. It’s a taster of what you can do. You will have to leave so many ideas on the editing floor as your write your TEDx that you will have enough material for about 5 other talks.
5) Marketing - That process of refining down to 10 minutes will give you more clarity on the work you do and why it matters than months of tinkering with the wording in your marketing materials. You'll also have incredible video footage to use for years to come in your content.
At the end of the day, doing a TEDx is an incredible personal achievement. It’s also a business investment. But it takes time to pay off.
