There's all sorts of definitions of storytelling which will get you confused about what it is and how to use it in your pitch or talk. At the end of the day, stories are just a way of making something relatable; a way to get someone else to care about the thing you're saying.
A great story makes you feel included, even if its wildly outside your experience. That's why you're sad when a good book ends, or your favourite show; you were invested in the outcome. It mattered to you what happened.
And this is where most people get stuck with storytelling: they misunderstand the mattering. The personal bit.
Stories have to be personal, yes. But personal doesn't mean it's ABOUT you. It means it matters to you.
You can never get someone to love and care about your work as much as you do; but by showing them what it is that matters, why what you do is valuable, you can get them to care about the outcome.
You can only get buy-in if the other person cares about the outcome.
Storytelling is the cheatcode for making someone care.
This was the heart of the growth clinic I delivered at the Female Founders Growth Summit in Edinburgh on 1st October. 300 women in businesses that are scaling- with their sights on millions. What an honor to help them on their journey. https://lnkd.in/p/ejd-ZbtK
